Arcana Obscura

Created by Hannah

Explore the world of tarot with the magic of poetry with Taroetry! This is the first publicly-available project from Arcana Obscura, an art collective grounded in tarot, poetry, and visual arts. Find us on instagram! @arcanaobscura Our pre-order store is now available below for those who didn't get a chance to back us on Kickstarter (and shipping is now available internationally!). Taroetry is an illustrated book of rhymed poetry about tarot based on the structure of the Rider-Waite-Smith deck. In making this book, we seek to make the ritual of self-reflection through tarot accessible to all. Check out our Kickstarter for more details about this project.

Hello everyone,

First: there are a few backers who haven't finished their survey!

Please check for an email from Backerkit. If you have any questions or difficulties accessing our survey, please message us on Kickstarter! We can send you a link to complete it.

Second: due to the logistics of printing and shipping, our rewards will be fulfilled later than expected.

We have never been through the self-publishing process before, and we continue to discover new things! We appreciate your patience and grace as we find our way through the final stages of this project. We will update you again as soon as we know our finalized shipping date, but you can still expect to have Taroetry in your hands before the end of 2019!

Third: the final product is coming together beautifully! Below are a couple new pages we wanted to share with all of you.

Two page spread for The Empress within The Fool's Journey

Once again, thank you for all of your support and patience as we navigate this process! We are  growing and learning so much and could not have gone on this journey without YOU!

Preparing to send Taroetry to the printers!
almost 5 years ago – Mon, Jul 15, 2019 at 09:48:44 PM

Hello everyone!

We are so excited to be finalizing our formatting and illustrations, and getting ready to send Taroetry to the printers! This project has been an incredible roller coaster ride for the two of us. This past year has held a lot of big life transitions and changes in our personal lives, and Taroetry has been a constant space for our creative energies to flow. Taroetry's success is a new chapter for our creative collaboration. We are grateful to have a community on Kickstarter so supportive of our vision and to be learning how to share our work with the world!

We are currently expecting to send out surveys in early August, and aiming to ship all our rewards by October.

With all that said, here's another sneak peak:

Poem Previews!
almost 5 years ago – Sat, Jun 15, 2019 at 05:29:10 PM

Hey all!

Thank you so much for your comments and requests on the last update! I have a Major Arcana poem preview to show you... but first: an explanation of how the Minor Arcana section of Taroetry works.

Poetry about the Minor Arcana

One day, I hope to write an epic poem like I did with the Major Arcana for each of the four Minor Arcana suits, but this is not how I approached the poems for the Minors in Taroetry. Instead, I've created a matrix of resources for you to combine with your readings of the minors.

Let's say you pulled the Queen of Cups and wanted to use Taroetry to explore it. I would suggest reading the poems I've included below (note that the font and format are not in their finalized form here): the Quartet about the Suit of the Cups and The Queen's Reflection.

But let's say you wanted to go further... Taroetry has an encyclopedia of proverbs selected for each of the Minor Arcana cards. You could also read the poems about the colors that stands out most to you in the card (maybe Blue?) or the couplets about the symbols that appear on the card (like Fish or Ocean). If this seems like a lot of information, worry not. Strategies for using these poems will also be explained and outlined in Taroetry.

All of this is to say, there won't be one poem for just the Queen of Cups specifically. There will be many poems you can use to interpret the Queen of Cups !

Now for your Major Arcana Preview... The Hermit

Let us know what you think! We anticipate having another update within the next two weeks.

Updates on Final Copy for Taroetry!
almost 5 years ago – Tue, Jun 11, 2019 at 09:24:32 AM

Author Hannah Gatzka here with your Taroetry update this lovely June weekend. Can you believe it's June?! I can't!

I am taking some time this weekend to finalize the poems and text in Taroetry, and I wanted to update you on what this "finalizing" looks like:

  • I have added information to the section about the history of tarot. My knowledge is constantly expanding, and since we launched the project, I've added some information from Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom (I definitely recommend this book if you're interested in using tarot for self-reflection).
  • The Fool's Journey has been finalized! I believe that the series of poems I've written about the Major Arcana are the crown jewels of the poems in Taroetry. After many drafts, I have reached a version fit to print! Any writers among you probably know that it can be tempting to keep making minor changes, but these poems finally feel finished!
  • What's left? I still need to review and finalize the poems about the minor suits, numerology, court cards, etc. This amounts to approximately half of the book that still needs to be edited to my satisfaction (Cassie will confirm that I can be... intense about line shape and rhyme/meter). My goal is to complete this by the end of the weekend.

Now, as these are being finalized, I'd like to ask if any of you have requests for sneak peeks! Which of the following would you be most interested in seeing the final text for? Here are your options:

  • A specific Major Arcana card of your choice (I shared The Magician and Strength in my last update)?
  • One of the poems about the suits (Swords, Cups, Wands, or Pentacles)?
  • One of the poems about the court cards (Page, Knight, Queen, or King)?

Let me know what you'd like to see in a comment below, and I'll post it in another update.

Sending love to all of you!

Hannah Gatzka
