Arcana Obscura

Created by Hannah

Explore the world of tarot with the magic of poetry with Taroetry! This is the first publicly-available project from Arcana Obscura, an art collective grounded in tarot, poetry, and visual arts. Find us on instagram! @arcanaobscura Our pre-order store is now available below for those who didn't get a chance to back us on Kickstarter (and shipping is now available internationally!). Taroetry is an illustrated book of rhymed poetry about tarot based on the structure of the Rider-Waite-Smith deck. In making this book, we seek to make the ritual of self-reflection through tarot accessible to all. Check out our Kickstarter for more details about this project.

Latest Updates from Our Project:

Over 300% pledged!

Another huge thank you to our backers for helping us reach over 300% funding!

We want to share the history of this project with you!

Cassandra and Hannah, the creators of Taroetry, have been creating together for many years, beginning with theatre collaborations in college. Our first tarot-related project was Arcana Obscura: a one-on-one tarot-theatre experience. These performances were ritualistic, toy-theatre plays as tarot readings.

For that project, Hannah wrote poetry to give the language height and weight, and Cassandra designed and built the visual and ritual elements with embroidery, illustrations, found objects, and other mediums. What began as a theatrical production in one of our Chicago apartments has transformed an artist collective of the same name in which we continue to collaborate in the same spirit. With this collective, we aim to create projects that we ourselves would want to use as tarot practitioners and artists.

This past summer, Hannah was inspired by her previous writing for Arcana Obscura to create a full collection of poetry to illustrate her understanding of the ideology of tarot. Cassandra then began work on the visual aspects of the book in the fall. This collaboration blossomed into the concept behind this Kickstarter: a tool to support individual tarot readers in heightening their reading experience.

As Taroetry continues to brew and develop, it's been incredible to see and feel all the support from friends and strangers alike! We hope you'll continue to support us and follow our journey. This is only the beginning.

Peace and love,

Cassandra & Hannah

P.S.

In response to several questions and comments: we are not currently intending to create digital copies of Taroetry. For us, it's important to experience this text in the book format we dreamed of and designed for with you all in mind.

For those outside of the United States: due to the interest and extra funds from this Kickstarter campaign, we are currently investigating e-commerce options! If you donate even $1, you will be informed when that store goes live.

Many, many thanks to each and every one of you!

Taroetry is almost 250% funded, and we are feeling so much gratitude!

Hannah and Cassandra had no idea that this Kickstarter would be so successful! What started years ago as a side project for us is finally coming to fruition, and we are so glad we can share it with all of you.

We are currently hard at work finishing the illustrations and formatting the text so that we can go to print. Since we've already surpassed our original stretch goal, Taroetry will officially have a high-quality, soft-touch cover. (We're thinking jet-black...)

Stay tuned for more updates, as we continue to scheme and dream about the future!
